UROLOGY

Urology Treatment at Patiala Heart

Urology is a branch of medicine that treats disorders of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra in both men and women. It also addresses the male reproductive organs such as prostate, scrotum, testes, penis, etc. Urologic health is crucial because everyone can have health issues in these sections of their body.

Urology is also classified as a surgical speciality. In addition to performing surgeries, urologists are medical professionals with expertise in internal medicine, paediatrics, gynaecology, and other fields.

We at Patiala Heart recognise the importance of urological wellness to your whole health. With cutting-edge therapies catered to each patient's needs, our urology department provides comprehensive, patient-centred care for various urological disorders. Our committed team of professionals can help you at every stage, from straightforward issues to complicated circumstances.

Typical Urology Issues

Both men and women can experience urological difficulties, which can lead to discomfort and, in certain situations, major health consequences. These are a few of the most prevalent urological issues:

UTIs, or urinary tract infections

These are some of the most prevalent urological issues, frequently resulting in lower abdomen pain, frequent impulses to urinate, and uncomfortable urination.

Stones in the kidneys

These are referred to as urinary tract obstructions and excruciating pain that are caused by hard mineral and salt deposits that develop in the kidneys.

Disorders of the Bladder

It consists of problems such as hyperactive bladders or urinary incontinence, which can cause accidents, urgency, or trouble holding pee.

Prostate Issues

It implies prostate gland enlargement or inflammation, which usually affects men over 50 and results in problems with urination and sexual health.

Urology Medical Treatments and Procedures

1. Medical Diseases

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

Urinary Tract Infections occur when bacteria enter the urinary system, affecting the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra. Our patients often experience burning during urination, frequent urges to go, or cloudy urine. We typically address UTIs with antibiotics, increased fluid intake, and preventive measures like good hygiene.

Overactive Bladder (OAB)

Overactive Bladder (OAB) causes a sudden, strong urge to urinate, leading to frequent restroom visits or occasional leakage. Many of our patients report urgency, frequency, and, at times, urge incontinence. We manage OAB through lifestyle changes, pelvic floor exercises, medications, and bladder training.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland, commonly affecting men as they age. Patients often have difficulty initiating urination, experience weak streams, or find themselves getting up at night frequently. We offer treatments ranging from medications and minimally invasive therapies to surgical options like TURP, depending on the severity of symptoms.

Prostatitis

Prostatitis involves inflammation of the prostate and can be bacterial or non-bacterial in nature. Those affected may feel pelvic pain, painful or frequent urination, and possibly flu-like symptoms. We often treat bacterial cases with antibiotics, while non-bacterial cases may benefit from pain management, warm baths, and lifestyle modifications.

Interstitial Cystitis (IC)

IC, also known as painful bladder syndrome, causes chronic bladder pain and pressure. Our patients with IC frequently report a persistent urge to urinate, along with discomfort that worsens as the bladder fills. We typically use a combination of dietary changes, bladder instillations, oral medications, and pelvic floor therapy to alleviate symptoms.

Kidney Stones (Small Stones)

Small kidney stones form from crystallized minerals in the kidney and can often pass without surgery. Patients may notice sudden flank pain, pain during urination, or blood in the urine. We recommend strategies like adequate hydration, pain relief, and, in some cases, medications to help facilitate stone passage.

Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

ED is characterized by difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection that supports sexual activity. Causes can be physical (vascular or hormonal issues) or psychological (stress, anxiety). We address ED using oral medications, lifestyle counseling, hormone therapy (if needed), or surgical implants in more resistant cases.

2. Surgical Diseases

Kidney Stones (Large Stones)

Large kidney stones can block the urinary tract, causing severe pain and potential complications. When stones don’t respond to conservative measures, we may recommend surgical intervention. Our goal is to help relieve pain and remove or break down the stone to restore normal urinary flow.

Urethral Stricture

A urethral stricture is a narrowing of the urethra due to scar tissue, injury, or inflammation, restricting urine flow. Patients commonly experience weak streams, straining, or frequent UTIs. We treat strictures with techniques such as dilation, stent placement, or reconstructive surgery (urethroplasty).

Bladder Neck Contracture

Bladder neck contracture involves scarring at the bladder outlet, making it difficult to initiate or maintain urine flow. Patients may struggle with a reduced stream and incomplete bladder emptying. We correct this condition through procedures like incision, reconstruction, stenting, or dilation.

Peyronie’s Disease

Peyronie’s Disease occurs when fibrous scar tissue forms inside the penis, resulting in a curved or painful erection. Patients might experience a significant bend, pain during intercourse, or challenges with sexual function. Depending on severity, we offer injectable medications (e.g., Xiaflex), penile plication, or penile implants if ED coexists.

Hydrocele

A hydrocele is a fluid-filled sac around the testicle, leading to scrotal swelling. Most cases are painless, though some patients feel heaviness or mild discomfort. If surgical treatment is necessary, we may perform a hydrocelectomy, Lord’s procedure, or Jaboulay’s procedure to remove or correct the fluid collection.

Surgeries & Treatments

Kidney Stones (Large Stones)

  • ESWL (Shock Wave Therapy) – Breaks large stones into small fragments for natural passage. Non-invasive with quick recovery.
  • PCNL (Minimally Invasive Removal) – A small back incision removes or breaks large, stubborn stones.
  • Ureteroscopy (Laser Treatment) – A thin scope locates and breaks stones in the ureter or kidney for easy removal.
  • Open Surgery (Last Resort) – Used for complex cases when other methods fail, requiring direct stone removal.

Urethral Stricture

  • Urethroplasty (Surgical Repair) – Removes scar tissue and restores urine flow, often using grafting for a long-term solution.
  • Urethral Stent (Supportive Opening) – A small stent keeps the urethra open, used when other treatments fail.
  • Dilation (Stretching Method) – Gently expands the urethra with dilators or balloons, but may need repeat treatments.
  • Laser Treatment (Scar Removal) – Uses laser energy to cut or vaporize scar tissue, sometimes combined with dilation or stenting.

Bladder Neck Contracture

  • Bladder Neck Incision – A minimally invasive endoscopic procedure to remove scar tissue and restore urine flow.
  • Bladder Neck Reconstruction – A surgical approach for severe or recurrent cases, ensuring a long-term solution.
  • Urethral Stent – Keeps the bladder neck open, improving flow for those unsuitable for major surgery.
  • Dilation – Expands the narrowed area, but may require multiple sessions.

Peyronie’s Disease

  • Penile Plication – Sutures straighten the penis by correcting curvature from the opposite side of the plaque.
  • Penile Implant – Addresses both Peyronie’s and ED, offering a long-term surgical solution.
  • Urethral Stent – Rarely needed, but used if a urethral issue is present alongside Peyronie’s.
  • Xiaflex Injection – Collagenase injections break down plaque, requiring multiple treatments for best results.

Hydrocele

  • Hydrocelectomy – Surgical removal of the fluid-filled sac to prevent re-accumulation.
  • Lord’s Procedure – A less invasive method that folds the sac to reduce fluid buildup.
  • Jaboulay’s Procedure – Turns the sac inside out to stop fluid collection, offering a lasting solution.
